Strawberries
Posted on Wednesday December 12, 2007 by Pete

This morning, I added strawberries to my oatmeal concoction instead of a banana.  Just as I mentioned that it is good to change up protein sources because of their unique amino acid profiles, it's also beneficial to vary the fruits that you consume due to nutrient and vitamin differences.

Strawberries contain a range of nutrients, with vitamin C heading the group. They also contain significant levels of phytonutrients and antioxidants, which fight free radicals. These antioxidant properties are believed to be linked to what makes the strawberry bright red.

So what are these weird free radicals? Free radicals are elements that can damage cells, and they are thought to contribute to the formation of many kinds of cancer.

In addition to vitamin C, strawberries also provide an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese, as well as folic acid, potassium, riboflavin, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, copper, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

So for today so far, here is how my eating looks:

1030 am:
Dan Active L Casei Immunitas
42 gram protein shot

1130 am:
Oatmeal, protein, cinnamon, wheat germ, instant coffee, strawberries, blueberries

Peter Adonis: Jeff, Fresh is generally better than frozen, because some of the living enzymes in foods are destroyed either by cooking or freezing. I just put them whole into the oatmeal, but you could chop them up. -Peter Adonis

Jeff: Cool tip on the strawberries. Do you have them frozen or fresh? Chopped or straight up? Keep up the great blog... love the nutrition tips and videos.
